#RepresentationMatters

Yesterday, I was going through some of my old books and I found a time capsule that I made in 2004! My first grade school picture was in it and it brought back so many memories. I remember bringing my American Girl doll to school on picture day and my peers immediately told my teacher that I brought a toy to school (which was not allowed), but my teacher saw how much she meant to me and allowed me to not only continue to have her at school but allowed me to take my picture with her. As I look back on this, I am realizing how fortunate I was to see myself in a doll. Memories like this are a simple reminder of why I want to push stories from the perspectives of people of color in the film and television industry as a screenwriter and producer. I hope for all young girls of color to be able to see themselves in all media capacities just like how I saw myself in Addy!
